Obsessed

The hotel here in American Canyon has grape vines in the parking lot. Yes, you are allowed to pluck and eat them. Yes, we have. Yes, they are delicious. But more than wanting to eat them, I want to look at them. Aren't they magnificent?

Kalispell-Whitefish 2021

I think one more time-traveling post will bring us up-to-date as far as fire season 2021 goes! There may be a couple more, having nothing to do with the season, but we should be mostly linear from here on out this year.

Remember My Favorite and I had been sent to Missoula, MT and then the phone call came (although it's a great picture, right?) We were heading to Kalispell, MT ~ for now. But there was a chance we'd be reassigned before the day was out. Regardless, Missoula to Kalispell isn't even a 2.5 hour drive. Which, on the one hand, is great for me. Not having to drive all day is a good thing. On the other hand, when check-out from one hotel is 11:00 am and check in at the other hotel is 3:00, it leaves a gap. When I can't even check into the new hotel because we don't know for certain we're staying, that leaves a bigger gap.

Lucky for me, things are open again since last year's COVID lockdown. Means the libraries are open. And I love me a library. Air conditioning. Plenty of light. An outlet. Quiet. A bathroom. And they expect people to come and stay for a long time.

Plus, they had a cool carrel for me to tuck into and ignore the world.

Cool carrel

What made this library even cooler was this display:

Go ahead. Zoom in.

There at your left, first book, first row? Yeah. The financial one. That's mah friend. That's not just mah friend. That's MAH FRIEND!!!! I grabbed the book off the display, found the nearest librarian, and said “this is MAH FRIEND!!!" She was really excited for me. When she found out I was from Philly, Mac was from the east coast, and here we were in Kalispell, MT, she got excited for her library, too. It was a super cool moment.

Eventually, it was decided we were, indeed, staying and it was time to check into the hotel. I won't say where we started or post a picture, but let’s say… it wasn’t good. Everyone ~ including us ~ had something disgustingly wrong with their room. We were lucky because we only had dirty sheets, a single dirty towel on the hook, and no other towels. The guys were reporting full trash cans, dirty sheets, obviously dirty towels hung as if they were clean…. But the winner was the room with cum stains on the sheets. Yeah…. We found a different hotel.

First, we moved to the Best Western in Whitefish. I broke my own rule and didn't get a picture if the hotel, the lobby, or the view from the window, but I did get pictures of a visiting friend.

And some beautiful sunsets. That’s one of the things about fires ~ as devastating as they are, they make for beautiful sunsets.

But! As hard as the hotel tried to keep us there, the tourism in the area was insane post-COVID lockdown, and rooms were booked. It was so crazy that, where there was availability, rooms at Holiday Inns and Radissons and very ordinary hotels were going for $400, $500, even $600 a night. We thought we’d found a place willing to give us five rooms at the government rate of $177/night ~ but as soon as our mechanic with his very heavy Mexican accent called, his room was suddenly $350/night. My Favorite canceled all the rooms and we kept looking.

He finally found a Hampton Inn back in Kalispell willing to give us all the same rate ($225/night, which was a steal at the time, plus, clean sheets and no obvious racists. Yes, our bar is very, very low, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a great hotel! I love me a Hampton...).

My Favorite even got a birthday picture for Dr. Bella, posted here because look how handsome he is! (Although this may have happened in Yakima. He's still handsome, so I'm still posting.)

So handsome 😍

And the story from there ~ because there always seems to be a story ~ I came down for breakfast one morning to....this.

Shortly thereafter, while I was enjoying my bagel, the fire alarm went off. This was the response.

Since there wasn't a fire, that wasn't completely inappropriate, but dear lord, it certainly wasn't appropriate!

Then it was time to head to Yakima ~ and we're up to date for this season.

Whew.

52

October 3rd is my birthday. Over the last 52 years, I’ve had amazing birthday celebrations. Since 39, My Favorite has been more or less “in charge” of them. We’ve gotten home on October 1st before and he has come up with drinks on the balcony of a magnificent hotel and dinner reservations at our favorite restaurant—at our favorite table, even. One year, there was a Moroccan restaurant, a bracelet, AND reservations to Morocco itself (that had to be canceled through no fault of his, or believe, I would have relaunched Stilettos then). When we’ve still been on the road, he’s been just as good. There have been parties with the crew during carnival; grilling by the hotel  pool; and even one year, arranging for a long layover in MSP (Minneapolis-St Paul airport) so he could take me to a lovely café we’d passed so many times and had never had time to stop. We were even trying to remember where we were the year we went to what was recommended as the best restaurant in town, real fine dining, to end up in a strip mall storefront decorated like prom night, seated at folding tables and chairs.

Last night was no exception. On one hand, I had a very ordinary day. Lots of work, back by the pool.

On the other hand, I heard from so many friends and family. I even caught up with one of my Turkish friends (she needs a blog name. You need a blog name!) for tea.

Then, we got dressed up (as much as possible in the road)

and My Favorite took me to dinner. Italian food. A restaurant we’d hoped to get to while we were here.

Totally yummy. The gnocchi (me) was homemade and the squid steak (him) was perfectly prepared.

And presents, of course. Holiday stoneware I’ve wanted for 20 years. A complete set. Including luncheon plates. With thanks to Sister for taking delivery, so we’re not lugging it around until we get home!

The man knows me and loves me. And pulled it off again. Happy birthday to me.

The adventure continues…

Lovely Perks

There are definitely perks to hotel life where it’s warm. Yesterday, I took my computer down to work outside. I started here and chased the shade around the pool to the table on the right.

Got called “m’lady” by this guy, which was hugely unexpected. Then he started (literally) whistling “Dixie” (a song out if the South from our Civil War) which wasn’t nearly as unexpected.

And by the end, I was happily ensconced with this view.

Definite perks.

And the adventure continues…

October 2, 2021

I feel a little Dr. Whovian (the ninth, thankyouverymuch!) jumping around time like this but hey - welcome to my world!

When we left Yakima to return to CA and we all parted with a “see you in a couple days!” My Favorite and I ended up back in La Verne (with a stop for me in OR with the Talent Annex of the family), on stand-by “for a week.” That week turned into almost two, turned into “we’re sending you home on October 1” turned into “Wait! We need you in Napa for 12 days, starting tomorrow.”

Now, that kinda sucked because mentally, we had ended the season. My Favorite had asked for and been a given a day off (he was, technically, still on stand-by) for us to go to Disneyland. Aaaaaaaaand never mind.

The nice part of it was we got a 7-hour road trip together. At one point, he even drove so I could get some work done. (My computer has a nice battery life, apparently, and I can work in the car verrrrry caaaaaarefully. Who knew????).

Which finally landed us, not in Napa proper but only about 10 minutes away, in American Canyon, CA. Just last night, I learned how close we are to water (just behind the Safeway!!!! {a nationwide grocery store chain}) so hopefully there will be more pictures. For now, though....

Not quite sure what they were going for with the spheres on the wall.
What they got was disease. I can 99% guarantee "let's put
disease on the wall!" was not part of the design meeting. Also, I think was an art trend here in CA at some point, because it's not the first time I've seen these holes-in-nature-y, disease-looking things on a hotel wall.

The view from our window. I love this tree. Best view
all season, very seriously.

See the shade there? I can't help but wonder if maintenance
changes it every season. I kinda hope they do, even as I realize
that would be a hell of a lot of work.

 And the adventure continues...

Missoula, MT ~ 2021

Going back a bit... a few posts ago, I was en route from La Verne, CA to Missoula, MT, by way of...somewhere pretty in Idaho.

I have no idea why this loaded sideways; it's right-side up on my camera.

Full disclosure: I am a screaming liberal. Burn the shit down; universal income, education, and health care; dismantle the system of whiteness; stand with women of color; liberal. In high school, we took a test to see where our political leanings were and I came back Marxist. No shit.

Which makes certain states...difficult...for me. I am very good at keeping my head down and my mouth shut (rotor wing aviation is notoriously conservative ~ think Trump banners on trailers and veiled threats around talking about liberal ideologies during the Trump years) but I still don't enjoy it.

So, when we got to Missoula and found an inclusive, BLM, gender-equality type o' town, we were thrilled. If you ever need or want to go to Montana, I highly recommend Missoula. No matter who you are.

Since I tend to remember lobbies, let's start there:

Yes, I have already forgotten what hotel this is. But I remember the
lobby and the very fine cow chairs.

But I absolutely remember the ice cream. Place called Big Dipper Ice Cream. This is Sumerian coffee ice cream with dark chocolate dip, and cardamom ice cream ~ seriously, cardamom ~ with chocolate dip and nuts. Go to Missoula for ice cream. It's worth it.

We found a truly lovely restaurant called Scotty's Table. I wish we'd gotten pictures of the food. You'll just have to trust it was amazing. So, afterward, we went for a walk.

See? Go to Missoula. So pretty!

But while we were on our lovely dinner, lovely walk, holy-crap-this-might-be-a-date-night-in-the-middle-of-fire-season evening. his phone rang. As it is wont to do. Next stop, Kalispell.

And the adventure continued.

Firefighting 101

AKA Why are you LIKE this?

It has been pointed out to me that I have new readers who, while they may have a general idea how all this works ~ they are friends of mine after all ~ might also appreciate a quick tutorial on what all of this means. SO!

Every summer here in the US, the west catches fire and burns like crazy. Sometimes, it happens because of lightning strikes; sometimes it happens because people are stupid and careless. Sometimes the seasons are very bad and houses and people and animals die. Sometimes, the seasons are light and the damage is minimal. Usually, the season is somewhere between those two extremes.

What I call fire season tends to last from June through September. We stop making plans with friends or reservations to do things in May, just in case. We don't make plans until the end of fire season is near. There's no way of knowing exactly when that will be, but you get a feel for it after a while. But, this year is a good example ~ when we all left Yakima, we were saying, "see you in a couple of days" because there was no way fire season was over for us. We haven't seen each other since, because the fire season is wrapping up after all.

When the call comes that the season has started, it comes on Day 1, we leave on Day 2, and My Favorite goes to work on Day 3. It's that fast. Usually, the end of fire season is that fast, too. As I said, you get a feel for it. There's a sense of we're going to be done in a few days. We usually are.

***

Helicopters are and will be referred to by many names, including: ships, birds, aircraft, iron, heavy iron, and, indirectly, stick, as in "the pilot on the stick."

***

There are two types of contracts for fire helicopters: Call When Needed (CWN) and Exclusive Use (EU). A CWN ship is the gun for hire. They are part of the national fire resource and can be called up anywhere they are needed, for as long as they are needed. An EU ship has a contract ~ usually 90 or 120 days, but not always ~ to sit in one area or region and be ready to respond to a fire there. There are pros and cons to both, which I'm sure we'll get into eventually.

The last several seasons, My Favorite has been on CWN ships.

***

You will notice that sometimes I post super regularly. Other times, it's sporadic. Yeah, it annoys me, too. Sometimes, what I write will be humorous, erudite, and captivating. Sometimes it will be dry as dust and nothing more than a litany of what has happened recently. I apologize now for the dry ones.

We go through periods/seasons where it's so fucking interesting and cool and there's a new story almost every day! Then we go through periods/seasons where we're in the same small town for weeks: he's flying; I'm writing; and that's all.

I think if you click "follow" over there, you'll get an email whenever I post, interesting or dull. Or not. I know there's a way to do it, but I don't know what it is. Would someone who's done it chime in? Thanks!

***

Very, very occasionally, I will run one of these through Google translate. Some of my friends aren't native English speakers (HI! I love you!). And while they're all learning English, if a story is particularly crazy, I may post translations at the end of the post. Along those lines, I may translate words or idioms. Also, beloved non-native-English speaking friends, please forgive any mistakes in your language. You know I have no idea what it says down there. 😆

***

Finally, why do I still use pet names instead of real ones? After all, the internet is different these days; no one uses pseudonyms or handles any longer, blah blah blah... Except I want to be able to post pictures and tell honest stories and swear a lot and be silly and, and, and, and I can't do that if people (businesses, our respective places of employment) can Google us and find this blog. So, everybody still gets pet names.

Hopefully, this helps. As always, I'm glad you're along for the adventure.

***

Çok, çok ara sıra, bunlardan birini Google çeviri aracılığıyla çalıştıracağım. Arkadaşlarımdan bazıları anadili İngilizce değil (HI! I love you!).

Sim, também me irrita.
