Same Day, Different Post

From Bodega Bay, we went to Reyes Point (in case you weren’t paying attention during the Postcard Incident™️ from the previous post). Reyes Point has a lighthouse and a beautiful view. And to get to it, you get to drive through Reyes Station. Population is still 350, but I suspect it will boom soon. It’s already super cute. And close to the ocean.

No, it didn’t work. But we had to try!

English garden in CA

See? Super cute! Sadly, the place that usually serves water buffalo milk gelato was out this day.

Then it was on to Reyes Point. I literally gasped when I saw the ocean. Apparently we don’t spend enough time in Atlantic City. Expect that to change.

But this day, it was Reyes Point. And it was beautiful.

We didn’t get there while the visitors’ center and lighthouse were open, but that’s okay. I already had postcards and the view was still beautiful.

Folks, let’s be real here. The lighthouse could’ve still been open and we wouldn’t have gotten closer. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been. I’m still not climbing a 30-story building.

When you’re doing it with your favorite partner in crime, it doesn’t matter how cold or windy it is.

All in One Day

Yesterday was the first of My Favorite’s two off. We knew we needed to take laundry to the wash and fold in Petaluna (yes, we get our laundry done on the road; it’s worth the expense). Which put us in Petaluma. Might as well have an early lunch.

So we did. I highly recommend the quinoa and sweet potato cakes with slaw. I’ve also had the backyard bbq salad (but with blue cheese dressing because, blue cheese). He had the lamb burger and said he could weep.

But what next? Bodega Bay! Now, we’ve been here before but for various reasons, that was an odd trip (I was still in recovery from the Gallbladder Incident™️ and honestly didn’t remember a lot other than we’d been there.) Definitely time to go back.

Last time we were here, he’d gotten a Bodega Bay sweatshirt. This past spring, he’d been working outside, gotten warm, taken it off, finished his project, and came inside. By the time he remembered, the sweatshirt had gone on walkabout. But! We found the place! So we got him a new sweatshirt and me postcards from Bodega Bay and Point Reyes, where we were headed next.

$99.00

No, that isn’t a typo. Dude charged me $2/per postcard for $52. My postcards cost more than his sweatshirt. I was annoyed but whatever. Until we stopped at another place about a 45 second drive away and found them for .39 a piece. Then I was really annoyed.

My Favorite offered to return the others. Deal. Apparently, dude pointed to the No Returns, No Exchanges sign. My Favorite just looked at him. Said, “Look, they’re.39 down the street. We came in here, wanted to give you business, get a sweatshirt and some things, and you took advantage.” He returned the cards, got our $52 back, and we went and got .39 postcards. $11 including tax. Much better. And, My Favorite got a smoked herring I expect he’ll talk about for years.

There’s still more, but this is getting long. The rest of the day soon!

Mill Valley

The first crush I really had—like, why does my tummy hurt when I look at him crush—was the fictional character BJ Hunnicutt from M*A*S*H.

In case you don’t know, BJ (stands for nothing; his mother’s name was Bea and his father’s name was Jay) comes from the very real town of Mill Valley, CA. Just down the road from Novato. Where we are this season. 🙉🙉

Without further ado, I give you Mill Valley.

Please note—the clock was dedicated in 1929, so would’ve been here during the Korean War. 😍

The town was wonderful. Exactly the kind of place where BJ would’ve been from. The people, the energy, the shops, the food… It was one of those really good days that just make you happy.

Civilization

Generally speaking, My Favorite works 12 days on, 2 days on. Back when we were in Alaska, we started using those two days to find civilization again. I would grab an Era Airlines flight into Fairbanks and get checked into the hotel. He would finish his shift and come in on a supply flight. I’d order a pizza and we’d have room temperature pizza when he got into town. Then we’d have two whole days of civilization before heading back in time for him to start his shift at 10:00 am.

Over the years, we kept the idea of the days off being days we could have a little civilization. One year, he flew for a Seventh Day Adventist, so from sundown Friday night to sunrise Sunday morning, he was off. I’d have his bag packed and we’d check into the Davenport Hotel in Spokane.

Some years there’d be a mad dash into the closest town. Some years, there was a different hotel in the same town (but away from the crew). This year, it’s been particularly nice because we’re so close to San Francisco.

But the last two days, we’ve stayed in Novato. Brunch at the Creekside Bakery both mornings, including a Turkish dish that was one of the most interesting, surprising, and delicious dishes I’ve ever had.

While we were there yesterday, My Favorite says “we should have princess cake and champagne for dinner tomorrow night.”

Well, really, who am I to argue. Hotel life doesn’t have to be uncivilized after all.

Hot, hot, hot

Yes, yes it is hotter in Red Bluff, CA than in NOLA (celsius for my international friends).
